Thousands of cyclists in Bloemfontein, Cape Town, Durban, and Johannesburg took to the streets on Sunday, spending their day honouring the memory of one of South Africa’s sporting greats, cyclist Burry Stander.
Stander, who was only 25 years old, was killed in an accident with a minibus taxi last week while out on a training ride. His death caused an uproar amongst the cycling community, who are urging the government to help enforce 1.5 metre passing rules for cars passing cyclists on the roads.
Many cyclists believe that this rule needed implementation, enforcement, and awareness to help prevent more cycling deaths.
A bicycle spray-painted white was laid at the scene of the accident in Balito, and another was tied to the balustrade on Nelson Mandela Bridge in Johannesburg. Meanwhile, the driver of the taxi who struck Stander will be charged with culpable homicide.
