Loyiso posted a video on his Twitter page of a group of students protesting over high fees and noted one of them was wearing R2,000 sneakers.
The tweet comes at a time when at least four universities - Rhodes, Wits, Fort Hare and the University of Cape Town, have been affected by protests over the price of education. Some protests have led to shut downs.
Using the hashtag “Fees Must Fall” and #LoyisoGola, students expressed their outrage at Loyiso’s tweet.
Some said the sneakers might have been a gift, while others called him stupid for comparing R2,000 sneakers to R60,000 fees.

Here’s what the comedian tweeted:
THIS DUDE IS WEARING R2000 SNEAKERS pic.twitter.com/yC19iGpHzx
— Loyiso Gola (@loyisogola) October 19, 2015
I am just saying don't go to the protest about expensive things wearing expensive things. Qha!
— Loyiso Gola (@loyisogola) October 19, 2015
But many were less than impressed with his “insensitive” tweet.
Loyiso Gola appears to have fallen into that black middle-class trap of wanting to side with poor & but still wanting trappings of success

So Loyiso Gola thinks being a comedian, qualifies one to be well versed in every topic under the sun. pic.twitter.com/AqOrwvft2v

On the realisies, Loyiso Gola's logic is trash. So, so trash.

Loyiso is not the first celebrity to come under fire for tweeting about issues affecting university students.
Metro FM DJ Phat Joe was slammed at the weekend for sharing his opinion about the Wits University protest.
Stupid people: Phat Joe: No one protests when meat goes up by 200% Zama: No one protests when I buy nail polish and it flakes after 2days"
— Neria Hlakotsa (@neriahlakotsa) October 17, 2015
If phat Joe wants a suspention courtesy of black twirra he must just say otherwise apologize for uttering nonsense pic.twitter.com/2DTGG2pSjj

After hearing Phat Joe and Zama's irrational comments about the Wits strike on Metro Fm I had to switch off the radio @METROFMSA #phatjoe

TV and radio personality Sizwe Dhlomo and Tbo Touch were also attacked.
"A poor student who can't afford Wits fees must 'go abroad and look for education'' Sizwe Dhlomo is a genius.
— Mmeli Luzipo (@DRcarterSA) October 17, 2015
Sizwe Dhlomo said racism has nothing to do with power? Maybe I should sleep.
— Show Them Projects (@Zulu_Admiral) October 14, 2015
I can't believe that Tbo Touch actually said on his show that students must think about the image of Brand South Africa when they protest.
— Nkule (@nyakallo_m) October 15, 2015
I don't think Tbo Touch understands the nonsense that is Wits fees. Eg. My first year fees were R80 000, final year fees were R140 000. Wtf
— The Biggest Daddy... (@MusaMoousse) October 14, 2015
@METROFMSA phat joe + tbo touch + Sizwe Dlomo = AIR HEADS who are not university graduates. #WitsFeesWILLFall
