South Africa's darling of fashion, designer Gavin Rajah will headline this year’s Zimbabwe Fashion Week at Sam Levy’s Village, Borrowdale, Harare on Saturday, 31 August.
South Africa's darling of fashion, designer Gavin Rajah will headline this year’s Zimbabwe Fashion Week at Sam Levy’s Village, Borrowdale, Harare on Saturday, 31 August.
Entering its fourth year, the theme for Zimbabwe Fashion Week 2013 is ‘Fashion through the ages’ which founder Priscilla Chigariro–Gessen describes as a tribute to centuries of creativity and artistic endeavor that stand today as the most significant symbols of any historical period or expression of national identity.
Rajah, who is also a UNICEF Goodwill ambassador has featured in numerous international publications such as Vogue, Los Angeles Times, London Sunday Times, London Financial Times, Harper’s & Queen, L’Officiel, Icon, Milano Finanza Luna, Avant Garde, Uomo Collezioni, The Face, Donna and Citizen. The sought after South African designer has also curated an exhibition on Traditional Art and Crafts in the United States of America for the award winning Hollywood movie director Steven Spielberg.
In 2006, Rajah launched POSITIVE, an event and initiative geared towards raising funds for children with HIV/AIDS in South Africa. POSITIVE was the first Pan-African collaboration which featured designers, artists and musicians in one show which was headlined by international artist Seal. Passionate about working for and serving charity, Rajah has also staged various events for breast cancer research and HIV/AIDS. The fashion go getter has also donated commissioned pieces for Sir Elton John's 'White Tie & Tiara' Ball', to raise funds for the Elton John Aids Foundation.
Rajah has dressed some of the world’s most sought after celebrities and personalities which include Beyonce, Celine Dion, Jodie Kidd, Cameron Diaz, Naomi Campbell, Paris Hilton and Tina Turner. His collections have retailed in some of the world’s most exclusive and fashionable boutiques and stores. The serial entrepreneur has also designed exquisite jewellery collections for De Beers as well as The Tanzanite Foundation.
In 2005, Rajah featured in the hit reality series America’s Next Top Model by Mogul Tyra Banks as well as UK’s Fashion Avenue by Jodie Kidd. In 2007, he was appointed to be a judge for Holland’s Next Top Model.
