Our Chief Music Correspondent Chad Saaiman brings us his “Hot Song of the Week” every week and this week’s choice is the song by former Child star and YouTube Sensation, Ariana Grande, “Almost is Never Enough” Featuring Nathan Sykes. Is this going to be the next big hit that sends local entertainment news makers into a frenzy? Let’s see what Chad has to say.
The world is filled with many great and impactful up-tempo songs, especially at this moment in the industry, with artists like Robin Thicke and Bruno Mars dominating the airwaves and the charts worldwide. However, no one can deny a great ballad.
Ariana Grande, the 20-year-old singer from Florida in the USA, is the future. With all the young stars breaking into music after acting on children’s television, I’d say that she has the most potential, as her talent is true and not reliant on her past roles, such as the Nickelodeon show, Victorious. Reminiscent of a young Mariah Carey, Grande has the ability to incredibly utilize so many areas of her voice. Blessed with a beautiful tone, soulful runs and even the whistle technique, Ariana Grande has arrived. Her first single, “The Way” featured Mac Miller and her latest one featured Big Sean, (who has been very smart with his collaborations) were both well received in the industry. This is no surprise as she is working with the brains behind Justin Bieber & Psy, Scooter Braun. Known as the man who “discovered” the Biebs, Braun has a manner of turning any good star into a great one, focusing on great collaborations, merchandise and out-of-the-box music industry conceptual thinking.
This very collab comes out of the hands of Scooter Braun as he put Ariana Grande in touch with one of the band members of UK Boy band The Wanted, who he is currently managing, and breaking them into the US market via their reality TV show The Wanted Life. Nathan Sykes is fast becoming one of the ones to watch in the pop world, and has catapulted himself vocally to becoming “the voice” of The Wanted. If you have no clue as to who he is, listen to the bridge of The Wanted’s hit song, “I Found You,” and you’ll be able to hear why he is on this very duet.
Almost is Never Enough is a sweet and emotional ballad, that has Grande and Sykes singing about why a certain woman and man just never made it together, even though they knew that they should’ve been together. The song is featured on the Mortal Instruments: City of Bones Soundtrack, which also features songs by Colbie Caillat, Demi Lovato and Jessie J. I have had this song on repeat, try it out.
