It was the annual free Can Do! Woza 2015 New Year’s Eve bash on Mary Fitzgerald Square in central Joburg when Kelly Khumalo was on stage.
Two music industry sources who witnessed the jeers said that when Khumalo and her dancers walked on stage to perform Asine, some sections of the crowd booed
Asine is a song written by music producer Sello “Chicco” Twala. The meaning of the song is about a woman accused of killing her husband. After Kelli’s partner Senzo Meyiwa, was murdered in October, the song raised some eyebrows.
One person at the gig said when Asine began playing, many partygoers became upset.
“That did not stop Kelly from performing. She put on a brave face and continued to give a splendid performance to her fans,” the source said.
A second source blames people from Durban for the booing because Meyiwa was born and raised in Umlazi and Asine upsets them.
“People will be set free as soon as they know who killed Meyiwa,” said the source.
A music industry insider, responding to news of the booing and jeering, said Khumalo should stop singing Asine until Meyiwa’s killer or killers have been caught.
“As much as we understand that she has to provide for her two children, people are still angry,” said the insider.
