Hip hop fans came out in full force this weekend to witness the greatness that is Kendrick Lamar (okay, I know that sounds a little dramatic but if you were there, then I’m sure you understand). The self-proclaimed “King of rap” set South Africa alight with his Good Kid Mad City tour presented by Miller Boomtown.
I have to admit, I was not much of a hip hop fan before this event but after attending the Joburg leg of the three-day tour, I think it’s safe to say that I’m a believer..
The scene was set early as hundreds of fans lined up to see “King Kendrick”.
J’s? Check! Crop tops? Check! Super baggy pants? Double check!
Watching them pour into the stadium, I knew that it would be a memorable night – and I was right. The atmosphere was absolutely electric! I had chills up and down my spine all night – listening to a few thousand people sing along to the same song does that to you.
Now, I know this event was really supposed to be all about Kendrick, but I would not forgive myself if I did not give props to our local acts. The DJs, which included Channel O VJ, Ms Cosmo (holding it down for the ladies), did an amazing job of getting the crowd hyped. I might have even enjoyed her set more than some of the live acts (sad but true).
If Kendrick had any questions about the quality of Mzansi’s hip hop scene, those questions were answered in two words – Chana Power! There was definitely no better representation of SA hip hop in my opinion. Khuli was the last local act to take to the stage before Kendrick, and honestly, the show could have ended right there and I would still have left happy.

However, it was soon time for the man of the hour to make his presence known. The internationally acclaimed rap star stepped onto the stage and opened with his popular track, P&P
Kendrick had his loyal subjects eating out of the palm of his hand. I loved the way he was able to connect with his fans; at one point even bringing out his nephews to join him on his hit, Swimming Pool.
