Kgomotso Christopher is one of the country’s most recognizable and admired actors, having starred as Katlego in SABC 3’s hit soapie, Isidingo. We spoke to the talented actress to see how she felt about her You Spectacular Nomination, as well as what she thought of the controversial decision to ban Of Good Report.
Hi Kgomotso, we’re very excited to have you on ZAlebs, a very warm welcome from all of us! You're nominated for a You Spectacular Award for the 'Favorite actress' category; how does that feel?
This is a very special nomination for me. I have had previous nominations from the You Spectacular Awards but this is the first nomination I have received that celebrates and highlights my work as an actress.
It's always nice to be recognized for your work. Do you keep Awards in the back of your mind, or do you just "Do your thing" and Awards/Nominations and all the rest come naturally?
Honestly, I focus on my work. I believe the work speaks for itself. Awards are a wonderful acknowledgement of one's work or influence by industry peers...however it should never be the driving force or purpose of pursuing and excelling in one's craft.
I am a fan of your acting, you're not shy of telling people of your well-trained background. Do you think training makes the difference between a good actress and a great actress?
Thank you. To be honest in South Africa, training is more about your own self-enrichment as an artist versus the key to landing a role. That is the reality of our country's entertainment industry. I still encourage young artists to study and equip themselves for the various opportunities in the entertainment and arts field. I feel training or education can either be academic or practical. Some of the most talented actors I have worked with were either trained on set, on stage or with mentors but they took the time to learn from practitioners who came before them. I believe in career longevity in any field and part of that, is self-investment in the form of some form of education.
Isidingo is also nominated for "Best soapie" And has recently celebrated 15 years on air. How does it feel to be a part of such a quality cast?
I never dreamed that the first role I would land on mainstream television would be on a show that I always believed has some of the country's best thespians. Three years on the show, and it's still surreal.
Can we expect to see Kgomotso Christopher in the rolling credits of other projects anytime soon?
I am branching out into directing.
Being an actress and somebody involved with Film/Television; what do you think of whole Of Good Report Banning Saga?
Censorship and artistic expression have always and will always have a very thin line to navigate. I do believe in a society that upholds the democratic values of the freedom of expression; censorship can become a form of controlling the ability and rights of individuals to have an opinion, judgment and most importantly access to information.
One thing I Admire about you is that you steer well clear of negative headline. I’ve never seen a controversial “Kgomotso Christopher” story! Is it easy/hard or are you just luckier than some of the media’s favorite targets?
I don't consider myself and my personal life newsworthy so I guess that takes care of that issue.
Part of acting involves becoming a different person; Katlego is not the 'Nicest' person sometimes. Do you sometimes (accidentally) bring some of her personality into your outside life?
Actually, I don't, although people close to me always advise to channel a bit of Kat in me...just to avoid people taking advantage of the fact that I am actually a sweet and easy-going person. But I guess because it's not in my nature it's easier said than done in reality.
If you don't win "Favorite Actress" at the You Spec, who would you rather takes it?
I am in a category of women I find not only beautiful but also phenomenally talented and all equally deserving of the award. Receiving a nomination in the same category as these actresses is worthy enough of a celebration.
Zalebs would like to congratulate Kgomotso on her nomination and we wish her the very best of luck on Saturday night. We thank her for taking the time to be interviewed by us.
