Why I think Kid X’s new single is wack

Yes I must agree that The Cashtime Tsotsi’s for Life are back and just in time for the festive season however I am just disappointed in Kid X’s new single Cooler bag.

Bonginkosi Mahlangu, the South African rapper formally known as Kid X, is a very talented artist, who has produced some good music for his fans.

Most fans of the Cashtime stable were introduced to Kid X a while back thanks to his verse on K.O.'s hit single Caracara. The song has been undoubtedly South Africa's hip hop anthem of the year and its music video has already amassed over a million views on YouTube.

This week Kid X released a single entitled Cooler Bag, which was available to fans for free online. I’m not surprised that the track has managed to reach over 100 000 downloads in its first 3 days,Kid X has managed to create a new standard that people expect of him with his singles.

But I must be honest, the song is not exactly what I expected from Kid X; it just doesn't feel right when I listen to it, even if it's managed so many downloads in a short space of time. First and foremost, I think the bulk of the excitement around this track has more to do with the fact that a cooler box carries alcohol than anything else. It's a popular party utensil and it's always going to be an item people hold close to their hearts when they reminisce about previous summers in Mzansi.

However that doesn't mean that the song itself is particularly good enough to merit the title of such a popular and household figurine as the cooler bag/box. In fact, I'm disappointed; this had the potential to be one of the best turn up songs on the charts right now.

I'm sure Kid X just wanted to give people their next summer hit, but honestly it just hasn't worked out on this track for me. Maybe I'm wrong though, you can listen to the song here and let me know what you think.
