What's Hot: Malaika: The band that was

Looking back at the rise and fall of Malaika.

When it comes to the music industry, it is always crucial for artists to re-invent themselves.

With the number of new artists infiltrating the market every year, it’s easy for an artist or band to fall off the wagon. You might be the hottest thing in the market today, but will people still be interested in your music tomorrow?

Longevity continues to be an ongoing battle for musicians. Even the most successful artists currently have sleepless nights when it comes to staying relevant.

Unfortunately for bands like Malaika, that nightmare came to life when things began falling apart after the untimely passing of its third member Jabulani Ndaba, who passed away in 2008.

Between 2003 and 2009, Malaika ruled local charts and were played in almost every other wedding ceremony during the festive season in those years.

Winning awards became second nature to the group as they cleaned up almost every other music award.

But fast-forward to 2015 and all Malaika fans are left with are the memories and the four albums they released.

According to numerous reports the remaining members Bongani and Matshediso had a fall out in 2011 which lead to the demise of one of South Africa’s most successful Afro-Pop groups.

And even though Matshediso came out with a solo project three years ago, the album sadly had little to no effect, with minimal airplay and marketing.

It’s quite disheartening to see such a successful and talented band become nothing more but a memory.

We guess the only way to keep the Malaika memory alive is through their music.

What was your favorite song from the group?
