Actor Melusi Yeni recently received an award from the people of KwaMashu where he grew up, who honoured him for being such a good example to those who live there

In receiving the award, Yeni challenged those present to give back to the community by spending time with the pupils in the community and to nurture them into becoming good leaders.

Yeni was speaking at The KwaMashu Awards in Durban, where he said he has committed to helping a school in the community, the name if which he didn’t mention.

“As from next month, I will choose a school which I will visit every month to give motivation, as well as breakfast, and get to hear their challenges on a daily basis. As we are in the media sector, we have the power to change our youth as they take seriously whatever comes out of our mouths,” he said.

Melusi went on to challenge the people of KwaMashu to work hard in changing the negative reputation that their township has.
“The struggle still continues because this place still needs to shine and we want to be involved in all different sectors,” he said.
He also mentioned that, when he came to Joburg, he was mentored by Thembi Mtshali who also originates from KwaMashu and who believed in his vision.

“They were willing to help me achieve my dream,” he said.

A number of awards were given to various inspiring people who originate from KwaMashu, including Thembi Mtshali , Leleti Khumalo, Siyanda Xulu, Siyabonga Nomvete, Madala Kunene and Xolani Majozi.

Melusi Yeni is known for his roles as "Bheki Shabalala" in Tshisa and Isaac Tladi in The Wild. He also played the part of "Phenyo Mazibuko" in Generations, but left the show at the end of 2013.
