KZN comedian Mondli Mzizi (28) is hoping to make history by receiving a second award in the same category at the South African Traditional Music Awards (SATMAs) this coming weekend.
Mondli is nominated in the category for Best Indigenous Comedian.
In 2010, he walked away with this award and this year he is hoping to win the award again.
ZAlebs had a chat with the comedian to hear about his future plans and goals.
What sets you apart from the other comedians you are nominated alongside?
Oh, well comedy is my life, I am a great stand-up comedian and programme director. I bring life and laughter even to those who are not in a good mood.
You have won this award before. Why do you want to win for the second time and how important is the award to you?
Yes, I won it in 2010 and I want to make history by winning for the second time in the same category. Being nominated is big because it shows my work doesn’t go unnoticed and winning will be a big plus, it will encourage me and improve my profile.
Tell us more about your background in comedy?
I started doing comedy when I was studying B Com accounting at UKZN Westville campus, but later on studied Drama and Performing Arts. I also entered the So You Think You Are Funny competition in 2009 and made it to the top 14 and I have never looked back since.
And what about acting? Have you done any roles?
Yes, I used to work at SABC radio, doing stories and I have done a bit of acting in Mzansi Magic movies, the recent one being Domino Effect, where I played a character of a lawyer (Laughs). Yes, me!
What have you achieved in the industry and what else are you hoping to achieve?
I won a Future Leader Award in the category of Against all Odds, and seeing people and event organisers booking me for their events is an achievement, so far I am doing well. People can check my work on YouTube and also vote for me for the SATMAs.
The SATMAs will take place on Saturday, 3 October at the University of Zululand.
