I was part of a small group of journalists at the Hard Rock Cafe in Johannesburg. I watched as the Tribe One Festival organisers revealed that Nicki Minaj would be coming to South Africa in 2014. I was excited, ready to see the Queen of the Barbies live on stage. Of course we all know what happened next.
I thought about this on Thursday night when Nicki Minaj revealed “I’ve been waiting to come to South Africa for a while”.

It’s been a while, but it finally happened and what a night it was.
The night was kicked off by Cassper Nyovest, who was the only opening act for Nicki. The #turnup gang was in full force as Cassper performed a set filled with all of his biggest hits. An hour of dancing and dabbing was the perfect way to warm up for the Pink Print.
My ears still hurt from the noise that was made when Nicki stepped out. She didn’t hold anything back though; she dropped mad bars on tracks such as Roman’s Revenge, Monster, Superbass and S***ted on Em.
A lot of people complain about outfit changes; those people would have hated the show. Nicki Minaj wore one outfit the whole night. She didn’t really do much dancing either. But her vocals were on point.
I was surprised by how many people loved Nicki Minaj and it dawned on me: I was watching one of the biggest stars in the world. As privileged as I felt, it was humbling to see how much she enjoyed performing in front of us.
Also, fellas, if you can get tickets to a Nicki Minaj show, bring your girl.
Girls.
Love.
Nicki.
