Obama Welcomed to UCT

Barack Obama's tour of South Africa has been greeted with open arms by nearly all quarters of the South African public. Initially spending time in Johannesburg, the president of the USA took the time to visit Cape Town, making stops at Robben Island and UCT.

Speaking at the University, he was quick to praise South Africa on the excellent progress that its people continue making, proving that democracy is well and truly alive in the 3rd world.

Obama's speech was powerful, emphatic and inspiring; all the elements we've come to appreciate of the current US President. He also underlined the key areas of focus if South Africa, and Africa in general are to continue progressing positively.

You measure how well a country does by how it treats its women. We still have some work to do

In a time where women's rights and the rape debate are more conscious than ever, Obama's words could not have been more strongly felt.

Obama Visits Robben Island:

During his speech at UCT, President Obama shared a few details of his earlier visit to Robben Island. The emotion of the occasion was certainly not lost on him, as he and his family visited the former prison cell of his hero, Nelson Mandela.

He paid homage to Madiba, as well as the Robben Island visit in his speech, quoting the iconic former president:

People learn to hate and if they can learn to hate, then they can learn to love.

It was another positive day in the American President's tour of South Africa, one that will hopefully leave a lasting impact and strengthen ties between the USA and South Africa. Obama signed off by assuring us all that South Africa always has a friend in America to call upon whenever needed.
