Welcome to another edition of #BubblingUnder. The exciting feature on ZAlebs that is sponsored by our good friends at Flying Fish. Each week, we set out on a mission to find some of the finest young talents in Mzansi who are making a name for themselves and producing quality pieces of work. In short, we're looking for people who are ADDING FLAVOUR to their industry. After all, there's no way we could be chilling with a brand as epic as Flying Fish and not looking to add some flavour.
We've already interviewed some of the most talented up and comers SA has to offer, and today we're here to introduce a gentleman who caught my eye very recently with some of his epic illustrations on Twitter. Ladies and gentlemen meet OHYESLORD. He's an illustrator, a graphic designer and this week's #BubblingUnder star.
We kicked off the interview by finding out his actual name. I'd never actually known...
So like, let’s get this out of the way… your Twitter name is OHYESLORD, your email name is, Ordinary Ham; what is your name fella?!
Hamilton is my government name, Ham is my nickname, OHYESLORD is the name I use for my work and the stuff.
Alright, officially welcome to ZAlebs we are very excited to have you as our Bubbling Under star this week. Please introduce yourself to a few of the readers who might not have come across your work online?
My name is Hamilton, AKA OHYESLORD, I’m a normal ordinary guy and I’m obsessed with graphics and illustrations. It started off as a hobby, but I got to the point where I could use social media to put myself out there. Sometimes something looks awesome and you never really know until you get a reaction.
Okay we stumbled across your stuff when you were compiling your list of top 5 moments that got the youth talking; is it just coincidental that they were hilarious or do you aim to add an element of humour to your work?
For me when I do my graphics, I constantly need to bring something unique. I don’t just want to make an illustration of something simple. I want you to look at it and think “That’s different”
The character who featured has the head of the bird, allowing people to look at the picture for more than just 2 seconds, it makes you study it a bit better.
As for the humour, I have an element of humour to my work, not always but at times. I like to be funny sometimes and I realised with the top 5, that I couldn't just put the pictures there. So it made sense to add a funny angle as it helped me show how I look at this situation, it gave a bit of my own personality to it.
We saw that you designed VOW presenter, Gamelihle Bovana’s AVI on Twitter. Do you get to work with a lot of celebs and personalities?
I get to work with a few people. Besides doing the AVI for Game on VOW, I also created a tshirt design for GirlxBoy who are based in Pretoria. Besides those two, it’s just me putting my work out there.
Where do you generally display your work?
For now it’s a social media effort, mainly on Instagram and Twitter. I’ve got a Tumblr, but I’m still figuring how to make the most of that!
You’re also quite big on the youth and having them express themselves creatively. What do you think of the way the youth is set up in this country at the moment?
I’m 22, so I’m also the youth! The youth is exceptionally talented, I don’t know how to stress that enough. The fact that, right now, we can easily adapt to anything is testament to that. We adapt to technology faster than anyone else. We have advantages that nobody else right now. The young people who exist right now are the people who will be leading the country and leading the world.
We are young, we are talented but we need a lot more opportunities. My graphic and illustration work is self taught, I don’t have any background. So the youth can teach ourselves specific skills, but we need the opportunities to hone those skills and talents.
Check out some of the previous #BubblingUnder stars who are adding flavour to the industry!
Celebrities are role models and public figures. Do you think they do enough for the youth?
To an extent. The reason I say that is because I feel like they are trying to communicate with us at least. Twitter is a great platform because it allows someone sitting in their bedroom to speak to someone like Sizwe Dhlomo.
But that's not enough. Celebrities need to start trying to tell us their stories in a more honest way. To get to the levels of height and success they’ve reached, we need to perfectly understand the true hardships they went through. That way people can start to relate to the fact that she or he was in a worse situation than we are now, and yet they made it. Maybe I could make it too
Lastly, Erykah Badu follows you! How did that come about?
I don’t know how that happened! I followed her and tweeted her and I was speaking about her song named Honey. I was like “Erykah, that’s an amazing song” and after that she followed me! I thought she would have unfollowed by now, but she's still following!
