One to Watch: Capso

Born in Congo but raised in Johannesburg, Capso is a perfect African Cocktail and makes no effort to hide his love, passion and enthusiasm for the African continent. His hit single, Dreams has been capturing (Capsoring? Okay we’ll stop!) headlines left right and center. We took some time to talk to the rapper and we hope you share our opinion that he is one to watch on the local music scene!

Capso welcome to Zalebs. How are you; or rather should I say, “Comment Ca Va”

Oui, Ca Va Bien (YES! I'm well)! You Speak French? [We speak a bit!] Well we should have dinner and I can coach you guys!

[Laugh] It’s a pleasure to have you, we’re all fans of your hit single Dreams. I just have to ask, how did it feel seeing the video for Dreams on MTV, Trace, Channel O?

It was like; "They finally put it on!" I don’t think you realize how much you have to FIGHT for that. There's so much competition. Its great to get that kind of airtime. You work hard to make it  your work as close to perfection as possible, and now we feel like we are getting our just rewards.

I love the lyrics, what was the inspiration behind the lyrics for Dream?

The inspiration comes from multiple sources. There’s a lot of worry, a lot of sorrow, even some suicidal thoughts and other deep emotions that inspired this song. Sometimes you wake up thinking “What am I doing? What have I Done with my life? Did I wake up for this 9-to-5 Crap?” And other times I just think “I should have just in asleep” I found those dreams as a getaway.

You managed to squeeze in a bit of French Lyrics towards the end, you're JHB raised but Congolese born. Do you want people to know Capso as being of Congolese heritage, is it something you want to show off in your music?

It's important to maintain the heritage and all. But the truth is, I don't believe in all the little borders that say “This is Congo, this is Zambia, South Africa etc” Africa is one big place where we are united, and that’s the way I prefer to see it. I’m African.

Tell me about the video for Dreams, who was behind it?

I work closely with my man Diego [Who is in the car and at this point says hello!], with the video for dreams and I saw this beautiful place in Nelspruit and I just knew that it just fits the sound of the song. I told my team about it and they hooked me up with some places there and some places in JHB. We discussed it all together. The idea was for the character to come through a dream world where he’s running through a mountain. Instead of showing you every single lyric in visual form, we decided to choose moments that capture the essence of the song.

It really sounds like you have a good relationship with your team. Tell me about them?

I believe in teamwork. I think that's what we have. When Prince left his label he said, “Let the baker bake his bread.” You've got to trust people who are good at things to do those things. We argue all the time, but at the end of the day everybody needs some motivation. We’re not afraid to express ourselves and appeal to each others’ strengths and that’s what makes us tick. Sometimes it doesn't. And when that happens, we look at the decisions we need to make and we move forward. Everything we do, whether it’s fighting, making music or discussing important things, we do it together.

Capso Loves working With Other Musicians and helping Raw Talent

You've collaborated with he likes of Tumi from The Volume, Tamara Dey; What does collaborating with such quality musicians add to your own growth as a musician?

It's just fun haha! It's like playing for a certain team, and getting to play with different players on different teams. Right now we're on our way to record remix of Dreams with some high profile names (Who I can’t name, sorry!) and I look forward to that. I like to bounce off other people’s talents.

You're not just about your own fame, you want to expose and market other raw musical talents, tell me about that?

A few years ago we sold a compilation across petrol stations where people could send in their songs and really work together with us. It was fantastic, and I like to give people a platform to rise. Right now we are working on a major project. People will be able to enter a competition and stand a chance of winning a larger recording opportunity with some of the biggest names in music. They’ll get to travel to different countries and really leave their mark. Watch out for this show! It’s going to be amazing.

Capso thanks so much for chatting with us, and we wish you all the best going forward!
And I thank you Team Zalebs. I hope we get that dinner soon!

We’re holding him to it!
