On ZAlebs we love to give a chance to some of the upcoming artists in Mzansi, and this week is no different. The young and talented, DJ Simtronic, is our "One to Watch" this week. He recently released his latest single, "Wonderland" featuring Mish and Bonafide. We chatted to Simtronic about his journey towards the top, what he's accomplished and what is still to come.
Hi Simtronic and Welcome to ZAlebs. Let's start from the very top. Why did you choose to become a DJ and how did it come about?
Basically it stems from what I've always had -the love for music. I grew up having instruments around me, like piano, drums, keyboard- I had all kind of music instruments, and I learnt to compose music on my own.I told myself that I need to love music and starting asking myself as to how can I make people happy and make a career out it. DJing turned out to be the route and so far, I'm loving it..
Where did the name DJ Simtonic come from?
Well my first name is Simpiwe, so that's the 'Sim' part. My goal is that at the end of the day is to be an electronic dance music (EDM) DJ/producer and to eventually play world wide gigs. so the 'Tronic' part of my name is taken from the word 'Electronic'.
How do you get the crowd pumped?
I’m a very energetic person myself, and so it’s not that difficult to get the crowd pumped.
Do you bring your own backup equipment?
Sometimes, it depends onwhere I am playing. If, for instance, I'm playing outside of the country it’s when I always bring my backup equipment. I’ve played in countries like Swaziland, Lesotho, Zambia, Mozambique and I’ve played in the USA.
How would you describe your first gig?
My first gig was very exciting. I always hoped that people were going to love me and my music, and the outcome of the first gig was exactly that. people loved me and it was very exciting.
What would you say is your favorite part of the job?
It has to be the love that you get from the people because you go to a place for the first time, and once you get there you find people really appreciate what it is you do best. Like I said, my motto is "They Shall Dance!"
What's the most challenging part of the job?
The challenges for me involve being accepted by the media, because you find that you doing one thing and the media won’t come and support you. Having to personally market yourself is another big challenge.
What’s the best event you’ve played at?
The best event that I've played at was in the Hipnotik Festival in Swaziland.
When all the partying is over, how do you like chill out?
Well, I always check what other people are doing and make plans with them- mainly friends and family.
Tell us about your single Wonderland?
The single is out and we released it last week Thursday (10 October) and the song is meant to make the listener get a little closer to their "Wonderland". People interpret music differently so the song will make each individual feel their own special feeling. I am hoping to hit the local music scene by storm with this track.
What style of DJ are you?
I play any type of house music.
What established DJ’s would you compare yourself to?
I wouldn't use the word compare, but the guys I hope see my career emulating are people like DJ Fresh and Euphonik. Those guys are doing what I want to do and that’s where I see myself going.
When can we expect an album from DJ SImtronic?
If everything goes well I think end of next year or 2015.
