TBT: I wanted to be a YoTV presenter

This TBT special is dedicated to the good old days of aspiring to be a Yo TV presenter.

Back in my time before my innocence was removed and before I came to understand evil terms like “debit orders”, “rent”, “insurance” and “medical aid”, I had greater aspirations that kept me awake in the middle of the night.

Between primary school and high school, I had always dreamed about being a YoTV/Wildroom presenter, not because I necessarily wanted to be famous (lies!), but because the talented class of YoTV’s yesteryear presenters made the job look like so much fun!

The likes of Carlie Fields, Sade, C.C and Psyfo, in my little world, were undoubtedly one of the coolest kids to ever land on our television screens. Cooler than the Cashtime crew (Yeah, I said it).

Before I became bujy and began watching kids shows like Cartoon Network, Ktv and Nickelodeon, YoTV was the place to be. School afternoons were the highlight of my day, as I knew another date with the Wildroom crew was underway. Holidays were the most painful, as I would have to wait almost the entire day to see the crew, but when the clock struck three, it was on!

I remember how the “room” in Wildroom had those two boggling eyes, and how I’d get an adrenalin rush of excitement whenever those two eyes pounced about on my TV screen - an indication that it was time for some wildness in the YoTV studios.

YoTV theme songs

These were the best. If you were a kid growing up in the 1990s and early 2000s, and didn’t know any of the YoTV songs, then I’m judging you from the other side of this computer. Sies!

After some digging in the archives I struggled to find the “Gimme YoTV” music video. Urban Brew folks, please help.

This video featured the likes of the first batch of YoTV presenters, such as Entle Dambuza, Mandisa Nakana, Byron Taylor and Siphiwe Mtshali.

Then after a couple of years, the crew switched things up with a new and improved song and video. I wanted to be part of this video so badly!

And lastly, who could forget Disney Cartoon Café’s Twiggle. Their ice cream microphone always made me hungry.

Sigh, I sure do miss those days. Could someone please invent a time machine so all of us wannabe YoTV presenters can go back and re-live our childhood dream.
