Popstars dominated last night's European Music Awards; see what we thought of last night's award show!

The MTV European Music Awards took place in Glasgow, Scotland last night and as usual, the show delivered some real humdingers, surprises and as we can always expect, moments that got the Twittersphere talking.

Host, Nicki Minaj undoubtedly stole the show with her blend of cockiness and general bad-assedness. I have to say, I had a a few doubts over her ability to host such a high profile event, but Young Money’s queen proved me wrong entirely. Her outfits were entirely on point too, her blend of sexy and dazzling was an absolute perfect fit for the night.

I found it a little puzzling that she chose to perform in the middle of the show, rather than at the beginning as most hosts do. Instead, she allowed Ariana Grande to open the show.

Ariana wasn’t bad but you could sense that she was slightly overawed by the big occasion. I’ve seen her perform better and I think on this occasion, the pressure got to her.

The quality of the performances on the night was mixed; U2 were incredible, as you'd expect from the iconic band. Bono's vocals sent chills down my spine, even while watching on television! I was also impressed with Nicki's performance. Ms Minaj performed a medley of tracks, keeping in tune with the time travelling theme of the night, while Ariana, as I’ve mentioned above, and Ed Sheeran could have done a lot better. I’m a big fan of Ed’s, as anyone who reads ZAlebs regularly will know, and I thought he could have gone with a more upbeat song for the occasion. He sang his romantic hit, Thinking Out Loud but it was a little downbeat and slowed the tempo of an otherwise frenetic night.

Of course, awards shows are all about the winners and the likes of Katy Perry and One Direction will be smiling this morning after walking away with some of the top awards. One Direction’s fan base came through for the boy band, who walked away with awards in the Best Pop and Best Live act categories, amongst others.

My big let down for the night was Sam Smith; how did he not win a single award? The big surprise for me was 5 Seconds of Summer winning the Best New Act award ahead of Mr Smith. Their smash hit, She Looks So Perfect set the tone for what’s been an incredible year for the Australian lads and they can be proud of their achievements last night.

I was very disappointed that none of my predictions came through, but I can live with that. Here’s a full list of all of the winners! We’ll be sharing red carpet moments, exclusive videos from Glasgow and plenty more throughout the week! Make sure you keep your eyes glued on ZAlebs.com!
