Rhythm City the love triangle broadens

So last week Friday Rhythm City fanatics waited patiently as Nicki (Nolo Phiri) finally told her baby daddy Suffocate (Mduduzi Mabaso) that she was expecting his first born.  However, what made this announcement a bit more dramatic is that Suffocate is planning on starting a new life with his current boo-thang and possibly new wifey Puleng (Tebogo Khalo).

We caught up Nolo to hear what Rhythm City viewers are to expect in the next episodes and how Puleng is going to take the sort-of devastating baby mama news.

As an actress, how challenging has it been playing the role of Nicki?  She seems like a woman who has been through hell and back!

I think Nicki has become a very interesting and a tangible character to a lot of people.  She’s always been very unpredictable and on the edge in terms of her storyline and the situation she’s in right now.   But most importantly I think this particular situation makes her more relatable as a character because there’s quite a lot at stake in terms of the decisions she has to make for herself and the unborn baby.  She’s also become even more interesting because the plot about her isn’t about money nor gaining some sort of power now, it’s a situation that she’s faced with that will change her life.

So would you also say she’s become more real to Rhythm City viewers?

Definitely, she’s about to be a mother; a single mother in fact. What makes her even more real is that a lot of women can relate to the situation she’s in, and so her role is a mirror of thousands of women living in such circumstances.

Where does Nicki’s future lie in between Suffocate and Puleng’s lives?

I think with her discovering her pregnancy she’s realised that the relationship triangle between her and the couple is nothing compared to the main focus right now which is the child.  All her decisions from now on are going to be about the baby I also think that she really has considered that her place within the couple’s lives is miniscule.  She’s realised that being pregnant has become bigger than protecting this love bubble her and Suffocate were trying to create for a number of years.

Things either change for the better or for worse. Do you think Nicki will become one of those difficult-to-deal-with baby mamas?

I think the one thing she doesn’t want to be known or seen as, is a baby mama firstly. She definitely loves Suffo and if she could fight for that baby mama stigma to be disassociated with her she will try by all means to do so.  I will say that having this baby for her is an advantage and it will always give her the upper hand. We see that unfolding and we see Puleng not being able to handle Nicki overtaking her.

Puleng is known as the sweet girl-next-door but we all know that when a woman finds out that her man is having a baby by another woman it brings out the darker side of her.  Can we expect that from Puleng?

She first tries to be a lady about it but she then see’s the act of Nicki being pregnant as an act of betrayal even though she was nowhere near the situation when everything happened.  Secondly there’s going to be a relationship forged between her and Nicki before she finds out about the pregnancy which will also add to her anger and the feeling of betrayal. However after she's been adviced by her elders to approach the situation as lady-like as possible we then see her trying to take charge of the situation and be mature about it.  But at the end of the day she's not the one pregnant, she's not the one carrying the one thing your partner has always wanted and it gradually does eat her away a bit, we even see her snap a couple of times but she's also quite a sound character who does back down in certain circumstances.
