A lot of people were surprised to learn that Donald didn't received a South African Music Award (SAMA) nomination. The nominees were announced on Thursday morning, and musicians such as Simphiwe Dana, KO, Cassper Nyovest were amongst those nominated.
This year's awards have been dubbed #SAMAXXI as the event is celebrating 21 years. Yoh! It sure has been a long time. Okay, now back to Donald, who walked away without a nomination. This is probably one of the most surprising moments in music this year. Donald is a platinum-selling recording artist and his music has received over one million downloads. He also puts a lot of effort in his craft and always gives us quality for our money.
Not to mention the fact that he's going to be performing at this year's Cape Town Jazz Festival, alongside artists such as Ringo Madlingozi. He's released songs with Bucie as well as Danny K lately, songs that have proven to be hits too. How did he not get a nomination?
I guess I'm not the only one who was shocked by the fact that he was snubbed. Rapper AKA also expressed his disappointment on Twitter. He wrote: "No nominations for @DonaldInDenial ? ... This guy invests blood, sweat, tears into his craft. Tons of respect for him. Keep it up fam."
Another Twitter user thought that this was personal because "if it was about music he [Donald] would have been nominated." While another user believes that Donald deserved to be nominated though. "3 years of consistency & record sales. Cuuuuuuuman," @SkindeepSA wrote.
But it doesn't look like the snub will hurt Donald at all. It might be a shock, yes, but life goes on. The singer has a lot of great things to look forward to - like his new music video for Don't Let it Burn with Bucie, which is expected to drop soon.
The top-selling artist went very big on this one by building a new house from scratch, just for the video shoot. What we love about Donald is that he takes his music seriously and always gives 100%. Like, the guy even has a famous red microphone, which is believed to have a life of its own.
SAMA or no SAMA, Donald is still one of South Africa's biggest artists.
