The Daily Sun quotes founder of the awards, Dumisani Goba, who during the announcement of the nominees in Mmabatho said this will help artists pay lobola for their partners.
This year’s biggest winner at the SATMAs will walk away with 10 cows and a trip to Dubai.
Goba said because the brothers in traditional music earn less, he thought this was a great idea.
“We realised that many artists were struggling to pay lobola. This is because some of them are not earning enough to afford it. We want to help them to fight the view that musicians don’t pay lobola,” he is quoted saying.
The winner will be selected from the Best Song category.
The artists nominated in the Best Song of the Year category are: S’gwebo Sentambo for the song ‘Phakamisani Izandla’, Ezikabhaka for ‘Thayilemoto’, Khethabahle with ‘Lindabazakho’, Moipone Nomtiti for ‘Koma e fologa theba’, Singley Chabalala for ‘Mbyana ya flora’ and Joe Shirimani for ‘Hekele heke’.
The awards ceremony will take place at the University of Fort Hare in the Eastern Cape on the evenings of 17 and 18 October 2014.
