Late on Sunday night, the tragic news broke that Senzo Meyiwa had been shot dead while visiting his girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo in Vosloorus. The South African Police Service confirmed the goalkeeper's sudden and shock passing. According to SAPS, the shooting took place in Vosloorus at around 20h00 on Sunday night.
No more news is currently available as to why Meyiwa was killed, but this situation is a shocking one, following hot on the trail of Oscar Pistorius' conviction for culpable homicide, and further adding to the issues South Africa faces with gun violence.
Meyiwa's career in a Bafana Bafana jersey took off following the arrival of Shakes Mashaba, who made him the national team's captain. His leadership helped South Africa get off to a highly impressive start in African Cup of Nations qualifying, with many believing he was going to keep Itumuleng Khune out of the side.
Two of Meyiwa's national team colleagues have expressed their shock too on Sunday, taking to Twitter to put into words their feelings.
We at ZAlebs would like to send our sincerest condolences to Senzo Meyiwa and his family in their time of loss. We will keep the website updated during the day as developments on this story emerge.
