Liesl Laurie from Eldorado Park was crowned as Miss South Africa at the Sun City Superbowl, with Refilwe Mthimunye from Bronkhorstspruit as first princess and Ntsiki Mkhize from Kliprivier as second princess.
Though congratulations are in order for Laurie, some took to Twitter to complain, saying she did not deserve to win.
Among those who complained was Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane saying:
"How did Sihle not win. I wish Liesl all the best in her reign, may she always represent SA well. Well done. Congrats to Eldos #MissSA2015."
Others, meanwhile, expressed surprise that she was from Eldorado Park. The massive Johannesburg township is known for its high rate of crime, drug-abuse and unemployment. In 2012, the township had the highest rate of drug-related theft and domestic abuse in Gauteng.
As recently as 2013, community member Dereleen James wrote to the presidency asking for President Jacob Zuma to help with the drug problem. Zuma responded with anti-crime intervention. To add to the idea most have – that Eldorado Park is all doom and gloom – the Bcom graduate Laurie is the first candidate from Eldorado Park to take part in the pageant since it started in 1956.
Below is what tweethearts had to say about the new Miss SA:

Do you think it's fair that people are only focusing on where Liesl Laurie is from, rather than the achievement of winning Miss South Africa?
