Sphectacula and Naves- business in order Pt 1

DJ Sphectacular and DJ Naves are two of the biggest names in the local music industry at the moment and their hard work is being reflected in their success. From house mixes to hip hop sets, the two can often be found together making music of the highest quality. Zalebs sat down with the duo in an exciting two part interview to find out what’s driving them forward.

Welcome to ZAlebs gents. To kick things off, please tell us a little bit about the No Regrets Friday Campaign?

No regrets Friday is the campaign that we’ve been a part of. It was founded by SAB and we saw an opportunity to be a part of it. The likes of Pitso Mosimane, Gareth cliff are all invovled, but the question that was still unanswered was whether or not they could do the ground work. That’s where the gap was. So we put together a campaign that will go to campuses and speak directly to the students. Me (Naves) and Sphe will be performing and putting on a set while coming up with cool activities the youth can participate in.

How long are you guys planning to run this campaign?

For as long as they need us to. We don’t really get paid for this. We are doing it it because of the social elements and the impact it can have.

Naves, how did you DJ career come about?

I used to hang around Themba Nkosi [aka DJ Euphonic,] and we would go to these parties where he would DJ and they always needed someone to play Hip Hop. I just rocked up and started playing Hip Hop.  I had CD’s in my car, and then I woke up one day and now I’m where I am.

Sphe-Which Event has been the highlight of your career

I don’t think we’ve got highlights, its more career changing moments that I can think of. I think that every week has its own unique offering and we get something different out of an event, but I think the one moment that comes to mind now was when we played Alba Lounge in Cape town. It’s a very small place and we went there and played music like we normally do. All of a sudden the energy just went through the roof and for me it was really special to be a part of that.

Naves-Tell us more about the new single The Weekend and the vibe in the studio with George. You guys are Dj’s and not producers- how did it all work out?

Usually we are just DJ’s. We get the artist to perform the song and we just put their name in front of it, even if we were part of writing the song lyrics and the arrangement. This time around, we were in the studio playing around and trying to make a beat and we met a nice guy from Cape Town and he had this nice beat with George singing. Sphe and I changed the arrangement of the beat in order for it to work for the song and that was the turning point of everything for the singer.

Can we expect an album from DJ Naves and Sphectecular anytime soon?

The song weekend with George is the first single out of an album that we will be releasing at the beginning of next year. It will be the kind of album where you just press play instantly enjoy it- its one for everyone.  We will be including the likes of Khaya Mthetwa and Big Nuzz on the album; we’ve been spending time in the Afro-entertainment studios, we’re just having the time of our lives right now.

They most certainly sound like they are. Catch the second half of our two part interview with Naves and Sphectacular tomorrow morning on ZAlebs!
