Supporter picks Pistorius over partner

As the world sits transfixed, listening to the much-anticipated testimony of murder accused Paralympian Oscar Pistorius, a loyal supporter called Cassandra Fani religiously sits in the North Gauteng High Court every single day, and has been since the trial kicked off on 3 March 2013.

Cassandra Fani is a 24-year-old sports management student with an unwavering support for Oscar Pistorius, who she met during athletics training at the University of Pretoria some three years ago. Cassandra developed a lung condition, though, and was advised by her doctor to stop running.

According to Drum magazine, Cassandra during their interview displayed "the conviction of a priest in a pulpit when she talks about her acquaintance and athletics inspiration, Oscar Pistorius".

One of many Oscar supporter who call themselves 'Pistorians', Cassandra told the publication that, as an acquaintance of the now infamous 'Blade Runner', she feels compelled to support him.

"Oscar would come to the track where we were training to check on the athletes and give us tips. So when his trial started I decided that since I knew him, I needed to be there to support him. I know he appreciates it," said Cassandra, who is reportedly attending the murder trial despite the fact that it is causing friction between her and her boyfriend.

Having attended every day of the trial since the beginning, Cassandra's seat in court is apparently basically reserved for her.

She spoke to Pistorius during his first day in court, and said of his demeanour: "His emotions were very mixed up but he told me he was feeling fine - not great, but okay under the circumstances.

"This is obviously emotionally draining for him. Ever since the trial began he's been reliving the incident, and the moments leading up to it, over and over again in his mind. It can't be easy."

Many reportedly feel that Cassandra's is not quite as concerned for Pistorius as much as she's looking for attention, but she denies this.

"For me, this is not about the merits of the case or the rights and wrongs of the incident - it's about supporting him as an individual," she said.

"Even if he's found guilty of premeditated murder, I will still support him. People make mistakes but that doesn't make them any less human. Sometimes you find someone who's a role model, someone who encourages you to challenge yourself, and Oscar did that for me and many others."

Cassandra is also a very big fan of Nigerian soccer star John Obi Mikel, and has three tattoos dedicated to him, but laughs off suggestions she can become a bit fixated.

When asked if she is an obsessive Oscar fan, she said: "No, I'm not an Oscar's fan and I'm not really his friend.

"I'd rather say I'm an acquaintance and a supporter. I don't know the bad side of him that's been painted in court. But regardless of all these things that are being said in court, he deserves support like all of us do. I'm simply doing what I'd expect the people around me to do if I was in Oscar's shoes."
