The general consensus amongst the image consultant crowd is that we should dress for the job we want and not the job we have. So basically dress like your boss. But what if she wears stacked heels and flesh coloured pantyhose? Resident stlye guru Miss Buttons shares her tips on how to dress like you mean business.
The idea stems around dressing for success. Now just because she’s wearing Chanel and has a Louis Vuitton iPad cover doesn’t mean you have to max out your credit cards to follow suit. It simply means use her style to inspire your own.
Use her confidence to inspire the business vixen in you. Poise and self-confidence are your number one ‘must have’ item.
If there’s one common thread between the world’s most stylish business women, it’s definitely got less to do with trends and all about knowing your style. Take Anna Wintour for example. The American Vogue matriarch has had the same hairdo since forever and she never wears a dress that isn’t above the knee. It’s always A-Line and I don’t even recall her playing around with different sunglasses shape either. She knows exactly what works for her and she rolls with that. Michelle Obama does the same, I mean have you ever seen her try a faux leather legging? Could you imagine? Kate Middelton has her royally sweet dresses down to a fine art and even Rachel Zoe doesn’t often mix up her standard wide leg pants, heels, hat and oversized sunglasses. Zoning in on work style uniform is the next key.
To unlock your style uniform you obviously have to work within the fashion perimeters of your workplace. Once an accountant frenemy of mine asked if I “seriously” wore a leopard print summer dress and gladiator sandals to my place of work. I replied “well if anyone showed up in a black bootleg tailored suit we would probably be fired”. Different places of work call for different fashion codes. While employees at funky ad agencies, fashion retail houses and media corps do enjoy a more relaxed dress code, the pressure to stay on trend and maintain individual style is immense. In high profile corporate offices, skirts are looked down upon so each have their fair share of challenges but there is one very simple overall rule. There is never, ever a business affair that needs cleavage or a micro mini.
