The nominees for the 2014 MTN Radio Awards were announced today after many weeks and hours of deliberating, adjudicating and listening. There were a few pleasant surprises, as well as a few surprising exclusions. South African Radio is stronger than ever and there is a station for almost every kind of radio listener (Sorry, still waiting for that heavy metal mainstream radio station)
This year’s MTN Radio Awards looks to be one of the most competitive yet as radio stations, shows and presenters are recognised in different categories. As well as the different criteria for judgment, the awards will separate radio shows into 4 different divisions (respective of each stations’ niche) which are: Campus Radio, Community, PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) and Commercial radio stations.
There were some pleasant surprises as some of our favourite stations were (rightfully) recognised as being some of the hottest stations/shows in the country. There were also several surprise exclusions. We took a close look at the full list of nominees (Which you can see at the bottom of the article) and we decided to give our opinion on who deserves to be there, who will be disappointed not to be, and who to watch out for.
Who deserves to be there?
First and foremost, a massive congratulations to our friends and partner stations UJFM and Kaya FM. ZAlebs makes an appearance on the UJFM Drive twice a week and on Kaya FM’s top 40 show on a saturday. Both shows (As well as Nick Explicit!) were nominated in their respective categories and we couldn’t be happier.
Anele Mdoda has done an excellent job as an afternoon drive time presenter on Highveld Stereo. Ever since leaving 5FM, she’s held her own as one of South African radio’s leading ladies and the nomination is testament to that.
A massive shout out must also go to Power FM. The fledgling commercial station raked up an impressive 7 nominations for this year’s MTN Radio Awards. TUKS FM’s Wayne van Jaarsveld and Vow FM’s Gamelihle Bovana can be pleased after being recognised for their excellent work.
Who will be disappointed not to have been nominated?
Surprisingly, a few big names didn’t make the cut this year. We’ve made no secret of the fact that we think Glen and Unathi’s time is up as a presenting duo. The pair’s show, The First Avenue was snubbed this year and neither DJ was individually recognised. Gareth Cliff and his morning show were also ignored.
Also, has anybody noticed that YFM accumulated a grand total of ZERO nominations? We’re not sure if it’s a snub or if they refused to enter any of their shows/presenters and the station itself into the awards. We certainly hope it’s the latter, otherwise it’s a very concerning sign for the good people at Y
Who should I watch out for?
All our friends!
Kaya FM
Mix FM
Vow FM
UJFM
And our sister stations:
Jacaranda FM and East Coast Radio- both of whom are probably going to scoop all the awards in their respective categories!
