Legendary Jazz musician Don Laka is not backing down from comments he made accusing SA disc jockeys, including DJ Oskido, Christos, Shimza, and Naves, of being “frauds”.
Don has been speaking out over the past few weeks about the ratio of local music being played on radio, compared to international songs.
He slammed SA radio stations, particularly Metro FM, for playing more American music than local – which resulted in millions of Rands leaving the country.
Don claimed that R200-million in music royalties were collected from the SABC, but only R2-million was paid to local artists. He even shared a picture of the amount he received – a tiny R3,044.
Don took it one step further and accused some DJs, who work for the same radio station, of being “frauds” in a Facebook post on Wednesday – claiming they “self-promote each other” for their own gain.

Despite receiving backlash for his comments, Don Laka is sticking to what he believes.
He told Destiny Man: "Thousands of people have been left jobless and money is constantly leaving South Africa because of the overplaying of international music and this hasn’t been addressed. People need to understand how the music industry works and how big an impact radio airplay has on an artist’s livelihood."
Laka added that the DJs who are upset about his comments are the same ones “that are on our national radio stations and I’m telling you they don’t understand what a conflict of interest is”.
He stressed that his main goal is to bring awareness to an issue that is killing South African musicians.
