There are only a couple of hours left until all eyes will be on Durban yet again. As our African artists prep to give us their best performances to date and wait patiently to see if they’ll be honoured with an award, we at ZAlebs are just hoping that the international artists put their best foot forward this year and not repeat the underwhelming performances we experienced last year from their counterparts.
Do you guys remember how disappointing French Montana and Miguel’s performances were?
French, walking around the stage and occasionally holding your crotch is not what we’d consider a performance, really.
Don’t get us wrong, Miguel can sing, but his 2014 MTV MAMA performance was nothing to rave about. Come to think of it, even Trey Songz was on the luke warm side with his performance, but then some ladies would argue that it’s because he didn’t take his shirt off.
This year the likes of Jhene Aiko, Young Thug, and Ne-Yo will be gracing the stage at the Durban International Convention Centre and, honestly, we’re nervous. Apart from Ne-Yo showing us a few dance moves and showing off his vocal abilities, we’re not too optimistic about Jhene Aiko and Young Thug’s mosquito-sounding rapping skills.
Jhene Aiko, who has been described as a soulful singer, unfortunately, lacks that charisma on stage, as seen during this Hot 97 Summer Jam performance below.
Honestly, we think a local act should be paired with Jhene Aiko. Maybe a collaboration with Bucie will help, because if her performance is anything like this Hot 97 performance, we’re going to have a problem.
Then there’s Young Thug… actually, we shall refrain from commenting on him, and we’ll just let you decide what you think about his performance when it happens.
Lastly, could we request that the host, Anthony Anderson, not butcher any of our artists’ names or their song titles? Marlon Wayans did a great job of doing that last year. You’ve had a week to rehearse, so that's ample time to pronounce the names correctly, Anthony.
Meanwhile, its great to see that our local artists have been working hard towards making Saturday night's festivities worth watching.
