President Jacob Zuma is set to deliver his State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Thursday, and while we will be listening intently to what the president has to say, we have to admit we’re also excited about the red carpet.
The SONA red carpet never disappoints, and this year we are expecting MPs, dignitaries, celebrities, and other high profile guests to pull out all the stops.
But not all looks from the SONA red carpet get the reaction guests hoped for.
We are taking a look back at fashion hits and misses from previous SONAs.
MP compared to a cow
ANC MP Thabiso Wana had everyone on Twitter talking when she walked the #SONA15 red carpet. Many users likened her look to livestock – a cow to be exact. Granted, her dress was a bit over the top, but we did not see the cow resemblance at all! None the less, she topped the worst dressed list.
Mandla Mandela’s traditional wear
Mvezo Chief Mandla Mandela and his then wife, Swazi princess Nodiyala Mbali Makhathini, were a fashion hit at #SONA15. Their traditional attire got the thumbs up on social media. We wonder if Mandela and his new wife, Rabia Clarke, will walk the red carpet this year?
The woman in the yellow dress
ANC MP Thandile Sunduza caused a stir during #SONA14 thanks to her bright yellow dress. Sunduza, who was heavily pregnant at the time, received major flak for her look, with some even attacking her weight. We don’t think her dress was that big of a disaster!

Malusi Gigaba’s SONA swag
Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba and his wife, Norma, looked stunning on the #SONA15 red carpet. We can’t wait to see what the couple wear tonight. Gigaba impresses every year, and will certainly not disappoint in 2016.

Mr and Mrs Maimane
DA leader Mmusi Maimane and his wife, Natalie, received a 10 out of 10 for their #SONA14 red carpet looks.
