It's that time of the week again where we immerse ourselves into House music with VOWFM 88.1FM

ZAlebs in media partnership with VOWFM’s The Killer Joint has been supporting the show’s latest competition - Battle of the DJ's which features local and international acts who are competing for the top spot as VOWFM’s ultimate Battle of the DJ’s winner.

Friday, 20 November marks the international finale between finalists, DJ T-Rock C from Chicago and DJ Lazerick from Atlanta.

ZAlebs had the privilege of chatting to one of the competitions international DJ’s, DJ Phantasii who has since been impressed with the talent she’s been hearing from the local acts.

Have you had the chance to listen to the local finalists and what are your thoughts on their talents?

Yes I did, I actually listened to the finalists during the battle and the playback of the show several times after the battle so that I could study each DJ and their playing styles. I like to be fair and honest. Integrity is everything to me.

I think each DJ displays their own unique style creatively through the songs that they select and the energy that they use when playing those songs. I can feel their energy through the effects that they use on each song and I can tell which song touches their soul and spirit as they are playing them.

What makes a person the ultimate Battle of the DJ’s winner?

To me, the ultimate winner of the Battle of the DJ's is the one that can capture my soul through their mix. If you have the skill and ability to capture a person's soul through song, then to me you are a winner. Many DJ's can play songs, but it takes a very special DJ to capture a person's spirit.

What’s your ultimate advice to aspiring House DJ’s who want to be a part of such a competition like this one?

My advice would be to play from your heart and be yourself.

Don't try to play like anyone else because it's going to be heard in your mix. Take your time and carefully select the right songs that you choose to put in your mix, and once you have selected the right songs, play them like that's going to be your last day playing them. Leave an impression on the listeners. Wow them. Make them feel it through their chest. And last but not least, don't let fear overcome your ability to shine. Be confident.

Any last words to the international finalists?

My last words would be, play your absolute best. Don't think about it just play from your heart and have fun while you’re playing.  Even if you don't win, you are still a winner to me.

When are you planning to come through to South Africa, we hear you have a strong support base here?

Thank you. I absolutely love South Africa. Even though I am from America, I play nothing but 100% South African House music. I'm introducing people to love South African House Music here in the United States. I'm planning a visit to South Africa in 2016. I'm going to be scouting the areas for a new home. I'm planning to move to South Africa indefinitely. Once I move there, I'm never coming back to the United States.

That's how much I love South Africa and I truly and honestly love the people from the bottom of my heart and I really appreciate all of the love and support I get from South Africa. Ngiyabonga
