We love to know what some of our local celebrities are listening to, and when we got the opportunity to chat to Dineo Moektsi about not only her musical preferences, but her actual career, we could not pass it up! Let's see what the presenter (And singer!) had to say.
Dineo, first of all, welcome to ZAlebs. How are you doing?
I'm okay thank you! I actually REALLY want to watch a movie, I'm just craving some popcorn right now! [Laughs]
We can't organize that unfortunately. However, we actually want to know a little more about your musical abilities. Until very recently, not a lot of people knew you sang?
This is why I always say (And people think I have an attitude problem when I say this,) "I didn't wake up yesterday and decide that I'm just going to sing." I've been singing since I was 13. It's only because things are coming out now. And social Media has this way of discrediting you before even seeing your abilities. It's annoying.
Oh wow, so are you musically trained?
I Am yes, I went to the National School of the Arts from grade 10-12. I applied to a University called the New School in New York City, where I was in the Jazz and Contemporary Department. I didn't get to finish the degree though, because it was very expensive! But I'd love to continue in the future.
What is playing in Dineo Moeketsi's Car right now?
Right now I haven't properly listened to a lot of things recently, but I'm very exposed to a lot of Hip Hop right now. I'm really enjoying J. Cole's Born Sinner right now. It's amazing! I'm a bit disappointed with Yeezus; I've listened to a few singles, but nothing has drawn me towards the album.
What was the first CD you ever got?
Earth Wind and Fire, in around 1998, it was the first full CD I ever got. My First sort-of CD was the Janet Jackson's Together Again. It was one of those CDs with just the single, and it had remix after remix.
What do you think of Local Music right now?
Local music is in a special place right now. Local trends seem to be embracing what US musicians are churning out right now, which is just a bunch of Ratchet music, and it's terrible. Everybody's beat sounds the same, everybody's rhyme scheme, everyone's delivery is all the same. I'm not too impressed. I'm one of the females that should be doing more to produce female music, because our females aren't doing enough. This is a man's game right now, our females are very quiet.
If you could Collaborate with any 3 artists, who would they be?
- I'd be intimidated, but I'd love the chance to collaborate with Beyonce.
- Kuli Chana would be great.
- When Kanye West gets over his crazy spell, he'd be the man for the job. I'd love to collaborate with the old Kanye.
The fun didn't end here though! We put Dineo to the test as we threw her into the lion's den with our 59 Second Challenge. Check back later in the week to see how she did!
