Gone are the days when rappers use to create videos just for the pure fun of it and of course for our entertainment pleasure too. I remember a time when I would get excited when the likes of Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliot and Ludacris released a new music video.
And that’s the thing, it wasn’t JUST a music video, It was a creatively thought out visual orgy that would literally raise the hairs behind my neck.
Music videos today depress me, they’re a constant reminder that I can’t afford the lifestyle they’re dangling in front of me.
Missy Elliot always set the bar with her music video theatrics. That black inflated plastic bag outfit in her stand in the rain video was my favourite part. And yes, I’ll admit that I use to secretly steal many black refusal bags to in act Missy.
Something along the lines of this video:
Then there was the Sock it 2 Me music video. The Mega Man video game look was an epic reference.
Ludacris also gave Missy a run for her money. I hold great memories of the Stand Up and Number One Spot music videos. From his many referenced characters to his costumes, at some point Luda was the king of creating entertaining videos.
“Feels like a midget is hanging from my necklace!"
Whatever happened to having plain old fun on rap videos of today? Yes, we know you can afford that Rolls Royce or Maybach (Even though chances are they've been rented for your video) But still, can we please bring back the fun?
