The strawberries, the cream, the Pimms and all the white - what could you possibly not love about Wimbledon? A tournament filled with tradition and glory, it’s undoubtedly the most coveted Grand Slam title for any aspiring tennis player. (Even if they can’t say so out loud.)
I’ve loved Wimbledon since I was about five. After every match I’d run outside and hit a ball against a wall, pretending to be Steffi Graf. As I’ve gotten older and come to grips with the rules, techniques and subtler skills of the game, I’ve only appreciated it more. I also came to appreciate the other grand slams and WTA tours throughout the year, and I’ve become what you’d call a tennis freak. (Very technical term, that.)
But not everyone’s obsessive about each point. Not everyone knows the difference between a good backhand and a phenomenal backhand. But you may like a bit of tennis nonetheless. So what should you look out for in the next two weeks?
All the leaning bums waiting for opponents to serve is one. Whether you’re interested in the ladies or the fellas, this is a happy perk. The compulsory white also makes for a bit of naughty fun, and you can clearly see why Rafa always has to pull his tighty whities out of his tight kaboos. (Even though he’s been knocked out already – BIG upset for round one!)
If you want to sound smart around the tennis table, here are some Wimbledon stats:
- If Roger Federer defends his title and wins the 2013 championship, it’ll be a record-setting 8th Wimbledon men’s title. He’ll overtake Pete Sampras, who won 7.
- Martina Navratilova has won the most women’s titles, with nine trophies.
- According to BBC Sport, 112000 punnets of strawberries, 12000 kilograms of salmon, 200000 glasses of Pimms and 100000 pints of beer are consumed in the two week tournament.
- Defending women’s champion, Serena Williams has won five Wimbledon titles, as has her sister Venus, who is out of this year’s tournament due to a back injury. This also means that Venus and Serena won’t be defending their ladies’ doubles title. They’ve won that five times too.
Other than that, there’s just the pure enjoyment of watching some lovely grass tennis! Quiet, please.
