If you find the wub-wubbing sounds of dubstep cringeworthy, you may want to avoid YFM this year. But fans of the musical genre, which has exploded in popularity over the past few years, will be delighted to hear that the radio station is making it a big focus in 2013.

“New, trending and emerging are just a few words that come to mind when you talk about Dubstep, YFM’s new musical direction,” Music and Digital manager, Mervyn Sigamoney, said in a press release. “YFM has always been known for ‘never playing it safe’ with anything we do. Our music offering has always been just that, and with Dubstep taking over the Hot 99 segment, we hope to yet again remain edgy giving the market what they want.”

One major change is the new Dubstep Hot 99 feature, which is replacing the Kwaito Hot 99. The station also plans to continue its YTKO feature, which showcases the hottest up-and-coming DJ talent in SA. YFM’s new lineup will take advantage of the fresh faces it has hired in the past year. DJs such as Mantsoe (co-presenter on Ankletap’s mid morning show), Sol Phenduka (co-presenter on the breakfast show with Mo Flava) and Smash Afrika (co-presenter of ‘The Afternoon Drive with Tholi B) will feature more on the station’s broadcasts.

Thando Thabethe has been promoted to her own weekend slot, while Bonang Matheba has moved to host a weekly R&B show, as well as produce and present segments for the  ‘Entertainment at Large’ feature.
