The country is reeling in shock after the sudden passing of business pioneer and   Property developer Dr,Richard Maponya. 

Ntante Maponya who recently celebrated his 99th birthday was pronounced dead in the early hours of Monday after a battle with a short illness. 

His death has sent shock waves throughout the whole country as many South African A-list celebrities took to social media to express their  condolences to his family, and hailed him for being a business 'Pioneer' who made an immense contribution to the South African economy. 

Dubbed as the grandfather of South African black business, Maponya was a pioneering entrepreneur who exceptionally rose above the restrictive laws under apartheid to become a household name. He is best known for building the multi-million Maponya Mall in Soweto that opened in 2007. Dr. Maponya became the first owner of a black-owned BMW dealership in Soweto in the 1980s.

In a statement released by the Maponya family, they said funeral arrangements will be announced in due course. “The family request some privacy during this time of grieving,” reads the statement. 

The business pioneer might have passed on, but he left behind a string of fond memories as many continue to celebrate his life. Radio and TV personality Somizi Mhlongo paid a heartfelt tribute to the fallen business giant, he wrote: "One day I'll tell my grandkids that this man right here is face of black excellence when there was no hope that a black person and success can be in one sentence. 

"I'm cartoony sad but happy to have lived in yo era and I know that ur at peace coz God blessed u with amazing 99 years of an amazing journey. Through u papa We Are......I am coz u are.....my first memory of the name Maponya as a child was going to Maponya  super market in dube to do groceries. How it was a status to be seen carrying those plastic bags coming out of a taxi. The pride on the faces of black ppl coming from a black owned supermarket.not having to go to town. Way back before there was woolies there was you papa....Rest Papa Rest.

Oskido wrote, “Richard Maponya was The Don, a father figure of black business who inspired me about the importance of ownership in a time when black excellence was a crime,”.

Musician Cassper Nyovest wrote “Pioneer, legend, phenomenon and black excellence. Thank you for leading and inspiring. I never met you but I was touched and influenced. A great life lived. Robala ka kgotso,” says Cassper Nyovest.

“Legend! We shall follow in your footsteps, Sir. Rest in peace Richard Maponya” says DJ Euphonik.


“My goodness, news of the passing of Dr. Richard Maponya just came in. What a man, what an inspiration to the Black SA community, an example of excellence. I’m sad. I remember how everyone around me wanted to be just like ‘uMaponya’ as a lot of us called him ekasi. #RIPMaponya,” wrote Metro FM’s Pearl Shongwe.
