As female DJs continue to flood the entertainment landscape, podcasting is also enjoying a major boom, with fresh shows regularly entering the market. Content creator, TV presenter and MC Sipho “Alphi” Mkhwanazi is the latest personality to launch a podcast, bringing his wedding-industry expertise to YouTube.
Alphi opens the doors to wedding planning
The Reception with Alphi premieres on YouTube on November 5. Radio personality Kgopedi Lilokoe is among the guests set to feature on the programme.
Through the series, Alphi aims to take viewers behind the curtain of South Africa’s wedding business while offering couples practical guidance on creating their ideal celebration.
He described the podcast as a welcoming place where engaged couples can examine their plans and decide what genuinely suits them.
- Alphi wants couples to avoid putting needless pressure on themselves over a single wedding day.
- He believes people should remember that marriage begins once the celebration is over.
- His goal is to ensure couples have enough information to make choices that work for their own lives.
He also teased the less glamorous side of the industry, saying weddings can be far more chaotic than guests realise. Over the years, he has witnessed stories shocking enough to make people gasp, and said viewers will have to watch The Reception with Alphi to hear them.
Fifteen years of wedding-day chaos
For the past 15 years, Alphi has worked as an MC, navigating seating-plan drama, last-minute dress alterations and even grooms who have made a run for it.
He says weddings have changed dramatically since he first stepped onto a stage 15 years ago. While he believes people will always choose to marry and celebrate love, he feels couples now face an increasingly difficult task when selecting the right people to help plan their event.
Alphi intends to simplify that process by speaking to the vendors who can turn a wedding into an occasion guests discuss for years.
From an accidental booking to viral stardom
Becoming one of Mzansi’s most in-demand hosts was not part of a carefully mapped-out plan. Alphi says his entry into wedding hosting happened by accident.
He recalled being extremely thin, feeling nervous and looking like “skin and bone” at the time. Yet even in that moment, he felt certain that he belonged there. What began as a chance opportunity later became a calling, one he describes as his whole life whenever he picks up a microphone.
- A wedding-hosting job unexpectedly set him on his career path.
- His Konkaring at Konka with Mam’Sbosh sketch went viral across social media in 2022.
- The clip won TikTok SA Video of the Year.
- Its success prompted him to leave his 9-to-5 job and convinced him that South Africans were ready to experience Alphi.
He believes his current success has arrived at exactly the right moment.
Television success and finding confidence in his voice
Alphi says television is an entirely different challenge and that every invitation from a production company or channel keeps him humble. Reaching bigger audiences has taught him to arrive prepared while remaining the most authentic version of himself when a director calls, “Action.”
Every production set brings a different experience, each channel serves its own audience, and every call time pushes him to perform at his highest level, he said.
His growing résumé includes hosting the Metro FM Awards and the SAMS, co-hosting the South African Film and Television Awards, and appearing in four Netflix films.
Despite being at the height of his career, Alphi has been candid about the struggles he has faced, including anxiety and a fear of hearing his own voice.
He said the qualities people dislike most about themselves can often be the very traits God uses to give them a platform, ensuring the glory goes to Him. His soprano voice once made him anxious and reluctant to speak, but he committed to using it for good once he understood how much healing it could offer others. That voice, he said, has since helped make Alphi a household name in South Africa while also building an international audience.
