A few weeks ago, I saw a post on Twitter from singer Xavier Saer a bread drive that he is involved with. Lately, seeing people give back really intrigues me because I feel that we just don’t see enough of it.
I started asking questions about the bread drive and found out that together with an organisation called Paballo ya batho, Xavier and volunteers spend every Wednesday night out in the streets of Braamfontein, giving out soup and bread to homeless people.
Although I have been involved in many charities, nothing quite like this has ever come up. I decided I wanted to experience this for myself and film it for you to try and bring awareness to what is actually happening on our streets.
It was the most heart-wrenching thing I have ever done. Fighting back the tears while out on the street became harder and harder to do. Eventually when I sat down to complete my video blog of the evening, I became very emotional about what I had just seen. My usually tough exterior gave in as I just let go. The video below is very personal to me.
If you would like to help, please do – with your time, donations, or food. Anything will make a huge difference.
