Playing a gig with Splinter Town is always very different to being on stage with Chix with Stix. Although I have a lot of experience in rock bands, it’s been a while since I felt this passionate about the music in a band I am playing drums for. That’s why I strive to make each show I play in the best one yet!

My best part of any show, especially when I am the only girl in the band, is the time before the gig where people look at me carrying equipment as if I am the drummers’ girlfriend helping him out. The next best moment is when they realise that I AM the drummer! It’s always cool to see that “aha” moment.

When Splinter Town were asked to play at Pretoria Boys High School recently, I didn’t even think about the fact that it’s an all boy’s school. On the way to the venue it dawned on me that this could be a very awkward night for me. Just being there reminded me of my school days…

In the set up time I knew it was going to be an awesome show by the mere fact that a group of boys were standing at the front of the stage chanting “drummer, drummer, drummer” before we even started.  From the first note we played, we had the attention of most people there. I even had a group of girls standing at the side of the stage cheering for me every time I looked in their direction.

We were giving away Vitamin Water and when we ran out of bottles to throw out to the crowd, they started screaming for my half empty bottle. I had nothing to rehydrate with in between songs, but it was worth seeing the smile on the guys face holding the half empty bottle.

In all it was a great show, besides my metronome freezing in the middle of the song! After a few photos, signatures and no more Vitamin Water, we went home satisfied that we’d had an awesome show.
