2026 Kano International Polo Tournament Set for September 23 Start

Kano Polo Club has set September 23 to October 4 as the dates for the 2026 Kano International Polo Tournament, with the competition scheduled to take place at the Usman Dantata Polo Ground in Bompai, Kano.

The timetable was approved at a meeting of the club’s Management Committee, which concluded arrangements for the annual polo event.

The tournament’s first section will be held from September 23 to 27, with players competing for two principal trophies as well as a number of subsidiary cups. The concluding phase begins on September 30 and will reach its decisive final on October 4.

Work is continuing at the Usman Dantata Polo Ground ahead of the tournament, including preparations to improve the facilities. Grooms are putting the ponies through their exercises and conditioning programmes, while the organisers have added new management initiatives, including more trophies, to strengthen the event’s competitive appeal.

Teams arriving from different parts of Nigeria will battle for the Emir of Kano Cup, the tournament’s leading high-goal prize. The Dantata Cup will serve as the other principal trophy, while the Dangote Cup, MRS Cup, Usman Dantata Cup, Audu Lukat Cup, Muhammadu Sanusi Cup and Murtala Mohammed Cup will also be contested. Outstanding performers will receive individual awards.

Kano Polo Club chairman Alhaji Tajudeen Dantata promised players, sponsors and supporters a tournament offering greater value, while stressing the role of established corporate partnerships in advancing polo in Kano.

“The enthusiasm from the teams has been encouraging, and we are eager to see the action begin in what should be the most thrilling high-goal season yet,” Dantata said.

The club’s Management Committee said it remains focused on delivering a streamlined tournament capable of raising the standard of polo across the state.
