The 2026 Nathaniel Idowu U-16 Football League will begin on Saturday, September 5, with 10 teams contesting five Match Week 1 games at two venues: the New Maracana Sports Complex in Tolu and the Nathaniel Idowu Football Pitch in Oregie.
Grassroots league sets out nine-week pathway
Peakline Sports World, under McAnthony Anaelechukwu, is staging the competition with backing from the Nathaniel Idowu Foundation, headed by Chief Yemi Idowu. The tournament is scheduled to continue for nine weeks and will conclude on October 31, 2026.
Its purpose is to provide an organised development route for young footballers, giving local talent exposure to scouts and opportunities for recruitment at state, national and international level.
Three opening fixtures scheduled in Tolu
The first match will kick off at 8:00 a.m. in Tolu, where U-14 champions Fortune FA will meet newcomers St. Petersburg FA. Two further contests will follow at the same ground:
- Seraphic FA versus Bright Star FA in the second morning fixture.
- Moore Wins Foundation FA against SC Heritage in the final match at the New Maracana Sports Complex.
Oregie hosts afternoon double-header
The programme will move to Oregie after the morning schedule. Young Eleven FA will play Ajegunle United SC at 1:00 p.m. in a repeat meeting from their previous U-14 Super 4 encounter.
At 2:30 p.m., Atico Football Academy will make its league debut against Divinely Blessed FA, bringing the first weekend’s five-match programme to a close.
Early test of the next age-group step
Although the campaign extends until October 31, the opening round is expected to offer an early indication of how the academies have handled the demanding move from U-14 football to the U-16 level. It will also provide an initial platform for players hoping to establish themselves beyond grassroots football and move towards the broader football landscape.
