
Abia State Sports and Youth Development Commissioner Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba has welcomed para-powerlifter Esther Nworgu, the Abia-born athlete who made history as Nigeria’s first gold medallist at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Nworgu secured victory in the Games’ para-powerlifting event, adding to a series of international achievements that have enhanced the reputation of Abia State and Nigeria.
During the reception, Ananaba praised Nworgu for her landmark success and hailed her as an ambassador whose display had generated pride across the state and the nation.
He said the Abia State Government, under Governor Alex Otti, was continuing to build conditions that would support athletes. Ananaba added that ongoing funding for sports development and athlete welfare was producing positive outcomes, as athletes from Abia continued to perform strongly in national and international competitions.
