
Having just shone at the Uganda Para Badminton International, the Abia State Team made a courtesy stop at the office of the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, to formally present the medals they won after finishing as the overall best team at the championship.
Medal haul and recognition at the sports commission
The visit came after the squad delivered a standout performance to claim a total of 11 medals: seven gold, three silver, and one bronze. The Commissioner’s office welcomed the athletes as they brought the hardware back for recognition following their top placing at the competition.
Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba congratulated the team for their remarkable achievement, stressing that their success has brought pride not only to Abia State but also to Nigeria.
Contribution to Nigeria’s medal tally and ministry backing
During the reception, the Sports Commissioner highlighted the importance of the team’s output, pointing out that the Abia side accounted for 11 of Nigeria’s 14 medals at the championship.
He also reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to advancing sports development, citing the leadership of Governor Dr. Alex Chioma Otti.

Gratitude from the athletes and officials
In a show of appreciation for the government’s support, the athletes decorated Sir Ananaba with their medals during the courtesy visit.
Abel Sunday, Chairman of the Abia State Badminton Association, described the triumph as proof of the state’s rising strength in para badminton. He thanked Governor Otti and the Ministry for their consistent support.
Sunday added that the championship was the ninth international tournament the team has attended since Governor Otti took office.
Also on hand, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Jane Igwe, expressed joy at the team’s success and welcomed the athletes home. The Association’s Secretary, Mr. Ekeoma Samuel, similarly praised the Governor, the Commissioner, and the Ministry for putting in place an enabling environment that allowed the athletes to deliver.
