Akuchukwu Aghazu, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria’s (AFN) Second Vice President, has hailed Team Nigeria’s strong showing at the 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Praise for Nigeria’s performance
Aghazu said the athletes’ results reflected their commitment, discipline and extensive preparations before the Games.
She added that the Nigerian team maintained its concentration throughout the event, with cooperation between the athletes and officials making an important contribution to the country’s success.
“From the opening phase of preparations until the Games ended, our athletes demonstrated complete dedication. Their approach to work was exceptional, and the partnership between the athletes and officials stayed strong throughout,” she said.
She also recognised the leadership of National Sports Commission (NSC) Director General Bukola Olopade, both in the build-up to the competition and during the Games.
Aghazu said Olopade’s guidance, encouragement and advice, as well as his ability to address difficulties, enabled athletes and officials to deliver their best performances.
The AFN official further praised the welfare arrangements made for the Nigerian delegation, saying the timely distribution of allowances and bonuses lifted the athletes’ confidence and motivation.
She described NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko as a father figure and thanked him for his consistent backing throughout the competition.
Aghazu said Nigeria’s accomplishments in athletics, boxing, cycling, judo, para powerlifting, weightlifting and swimming demonstrated the competitors’ resolve and hard work.
She also credited AFN President Chief Tonobok Okowa with building a positive connection with the athletes and making sure concerns were dealt with without delay.
Looking ahead
Aghazu said she expected Nigeria to enjoy even stronger results in future, provided the team continued to receive the backing of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the National Sports Commission.
Nigeria ended the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games with 24 medals, comprising 10 golds, and placed seventh in the final overall medal standings.
