Abia Warriors were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Kun Khalifat in their postponed Nigeria Premier Football League Matchday One fixture at Enyimba International Stadium in Aba, with goalkeeper Obinna Akuchie producing a decisive performance for the visitors.
Rain-delayed contest ends level
The match was concluded yesterday after torrential rain brought the original meeting to a halt on Sunday with 73 minutes played.
Warriors fail to convert pressure
Abia Warriors head coach Imama Amapakabo gave competitive debuts to six players, although his team could not turn its control of the game and attacking pressure into a goal.
- Kelvin Ihunwo
- Osimaga Duke
- Effimi Nsi
- Emmanuel Nnaji
- Seyi Oguntayo
- Chidiebere Nnachi
The home side raised the intensity following the interval. Innocent Godwin and Ikoi Ettah came on for Duke and Nnachi when play resumed in the 73rd minute, while Chinedu Iwueze was added two minutes later as Amapakabo sought a winning breakthrough.
Kun Khalifat increasingly retreated towards their own penalty area, but Akuchie continued to deny Abia Warriors the chance to take the lead.
The goalkeeper’s most important save arrived during stoppage time. Israel Joseph curled an attempt towards the target, only for Akuchie to respond quickly and keep the effort out, securing a point for the visitors.
Next challenge in Kaduna
Abia Warriors, the Umuahia-based team, will travel to Kaduna for their next match against Ranchers Bees. Amapakabo will be looking for a sharper attacking display and improved finishing in that encounter.
