Amorim Eyes Historic Milan Start With Victory Over Juventus

Ruben Amorim is one victory away from matching a landmark Milan start that has not been seen at the club for nearly seven decades.

Key takeaways

  • Milan have opened the Serie A campaign with wins over Torino and Venezia.
  • A victory against Juventus would give Amorim three league wins from his first three games in charge.
  • Luigi Bonizzoni was the last Milan coach to achieve that feat, doing so in the 1958/59 season.
  • Carlo Ancelotti, Fabio Capello and Arrigo Sacchi all failed to equal the record.
  • Milan face their demanding test away to Juventus in Turin on Sunday.

Amorim targets historic Milan beginning

Amorim was appointed at the start of the summer after Milan ended Massimiliano Allegri’s second spell in charge. The change came after the club failed to secure Champions League football and managed only 53 goals in Serie A, a shortcoming that has frequently been associated with Allegri’s teams.

The Portuguese coach arrived for his first position since Manchester United dismissed him in January, with the responsibility of guiding Milan back into European football’s premier competition. So far, his opening results have offered plenty of encouragement.

Milan began with a 2-1 home success against Torino before following it with a 2-0 victory over Venezia at San Siro. Those results leave Amorim on the verge of a rare achievement: he can become the first Rossoneri manager since 1958 to win each of his opening three Serie A matches.

Bonizzoni and Viani set the benchmark

Bonizzoni remains the most recent coach to complete that sequence, collecting three victories at the beginning of the 1958/59 campaign. Milan suffered just two defeats across the entire season and went on to lift the Scudetto.

Giuseppe Viani had reached the same mark two years earlier, winning his first three league fixtures in charge during the 1956/57 season. Milan then lost their following two matches, but endured only one further defeat before March and finished the campaign as Serie A champions.

Amorim has previously managed the feat just once in the Premier League during his time at Manchester United. His opportunity to repeat it with Milan comes at one of the most difficult venues in Italian football, with the team travelling to Turin to meet Juventus on Sunday.
