Tobi Amusan’s pursuit of an unprecedented third successive Commonwealth Games women’s 100m hurdles crown ended with bronze last night.
Bahamas athlete Devynne Charlton claimed the title in 12.33 seconds, denying Amusan the chance to make history in the event.
Jamaica’s Megan Simmonds finished runner-up in 12.41 seconds, while Amusan crossed the line third in 12.60. The Nigerian had previously retained her crown at Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022, but could not reach the top of the podium this time.
South Africa’s Marione Fourie was fourth after recording 12.66 seconds, finishing 0.06 seconds behind Amusan and narrowly missing out on a medal.
The world-record holder had looked like the clear favourite after dominating her heat in a wind-aided 12.19 seconds. That was the quickest mark ever produced in the event at the Commonwealth Games, although it was ineligible as a record because the following wind measured +3.8m/s, above the permitted limit.
Amusan, however, could not reproduce that display in the decisive final.
Although she missed the opportunity to secure a historic third consecutive Commonwealth Games title, Amusan still contributed another medal to Nigeria’s haul and extended her remarkable record of reaching the podium at the Games.
