Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has taken full responsibility for the team’s stunning Round of 16 exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, pointing to a tactical error during a second-half hydration break that he believes directly swung the contest against Norway.
What Ancelotti said after the defeat
- Ancelotti stated in an interview that Brazil had been the more in-control side before he made adjustments that, in his view, disturbed the team’s balance.
- He argued that Norway’s possession came largely without serious danger until the hydration interval, when Brazil’s setup changed.
- The coach suggested the decisive turning point arrived at that break, adding that Norway had been able to manage the game in a similar manner against England, even if they were not threatening in the same way before then.
- Ancelotti admitted he misread the momentum and made alterations that were unnecessary because the match had not truly slipped away from Brazil.
- He explained that once the lineup adjustments were made, the structure of Brazil’s defensive and midfield areas did not hold up correctly, leaving space for the decisive moment.
“I think we lost the World Cup during the hydration break vs Norway,” Ancelotti said. “Why? Because until that moment, the team was in control. It’s also true that Norway had a lot of possession in their half. They played the same way against England. They controlled the game, and they could’ve won.”
The experienced coach went on to describe where he believes his decision-making went wrong. “That’s where my mistake may have been, thinking that the team had lost control of the game when it hadn’t,” he added. “I made a few changes to the lineup, and then we had the problem with Erling Haaland’s goal.”
Ancelotti said he introduced Neymar and Danilo Santos for Gabriel Martinelli and Rayan shortly before the hydration break, but insisted the substitutions themselves were not the root issue. Instead, he maintained that the main problem was how Brazil reshaped its defensive and midfield structure to fit the changes.
Defensive exposure costs Brazil
With Brazil eliminated, Ancelotti also defended Neymar’s role, praising the forward’s contributions, commitment, and preparation throughout the tournament.
However, Ancelotti’s tactical reshuffle left Brazil vulnerable at the back, and Norway went on to punish that exposure. Erling Haaland scored the match-winning goal in the 80th minute as Norway secured a 2-1 victory to reach the quarter-finals.
