The Kelechi Anosike Foundation (KAF) Abia Champions League began on Sunday at Williams Memorial Secondary School in Afugiri Ohuhu, Umuahia North, with the launch led by Dr Kelechi Anosike, the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate for the 2027 Abia State governorship election.
The inter-local government tournament opened with a 1-1 draw between Umuahia North and Umuahia South. Umuahia South struck within the first two minutes, but Umuahia North rescued a point by scoring in the closing moments of stoppage time.
After the opening match, Anosike said the competition involving all 17 local government areas was designed to identify emerging football talent, reduce youth restiveness and help address unemployment across Abia. The teams have been divided into Groups A, B, C and D, with the tournament scheduled to continue for several weeks before one team is crowned state champion.
Anosike further promised that, should he win the 2027 election, his administration would create a specialised Sports and Football Academy in Abia. The proposed institution would provide athletes with organised coaching, mentorship and routes towards professional careers.
Community leaders, political representatives and football supporters were present for the opening fixture. Organisers also said scouts and coaches would attend later matches to assess players throughout the tournament.
