Cape Verde have appointed Humberto Bettencourt as their new head coach, with Bubista stepping down after guiding the island nation to the round of 32 at last month’s World Cup.
Bettencourt, 51, had served as Bubista’s assistant and was part of the team that emerged as one of the tournament’s biggest surprises in North America. Cape Verde advanced beyond the first round on their World Cup debut before suffering an extra-time defeat by Argentina.
The new head coach has worked with the national side for the past six years. The Cape Verdean Football Association has not disclosed the length or other terms of his contract.
Bubista departed after the World Cup to become manager of Renaissance Berkane, the Moroccan club that reached the semi-finals of the African Champions League last season.
Bettencourt’s first competitive assignment will come in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. Cape Verde travel to Mali on September 25 before hosting Rwanda four days later.
